    no brood

Did first check yesterday. First hive fine, bias, plenty of stores and pollen. However hive 2 was different. Plenty of stores and pollen - but no queen and no eggs or brood in any form.I noticed over past two weeks that the bees from this colony were hanging about on the alighting board more...

    snelgrove board

Started a split using the snelgrove board on the 5th June. Following instructions for doors etc there was a Queen cell on the 17th June. On the 26th the cell is open but no sign of Queen. Bees seem quite docile. How long should it take before I start seeing eggs or start worrying.

Was looking to rearing Queens by using an apidea. However my plan was to use the apidea Queen laying grid then create a nuc and place the new larvae in a Queen rearing frame in the nuc. How long should I leave the nuc Queenless before putting in the new larvae and also how many cells should I...

    hive going into winter

Had to replace my Queen a week ago with a mated Queen from a very reputable breeder. The colony has been taking down feed all week and bees still taking in pollen. Checked the hive today to check if Queen is working. Loads of stores but very very little brood and no eggs. Any brood would have...

    introducing new Queen

I was looking to replace my Queen this year due to the fact that although she is a prolific layer she appeared to be getting through the qx and laying in the supers, but could locate one in the area. I have now been offered a mated Queen from a reputable breeder. Being late in the season I am...

    introducing a new queen

Looking to replace my Queen. What is the safest way to introduce a new one kn her cage. Should the old one be kept (and if so - how?) incase something goes wrong with the introduction. The old one is laying well but unfortunately is small and is getting through the QE and is laying in the super.

    brood in super

Put on first super last week. Checked yesterday only to find they have started filling the super. More worrying is the fact that there is brood in the super. No obvious damage to the QE so I can only assume that she is small enough to pass through the excluder. Any other members experience this

    fondant liquifying

Made up a batch of fondant 3weeks ago using an online recipe and taking the temp to 234 f. Stored it wrapped in clingfilm in what I thought was a cool cupboard. However when I took it out today I find it has started to liquify and is now 'pourable'. What have I done wrong. Used the same recipe...

    air bubbles in honey

Received jars of honey from a friend as my bees did not have surplus. However I find that the honey is still full of microscopjc air bubbles. I have tried sitting some of the jars in a warm environment and some in a cooler environment but still the honey has the bubbles. They have been jarred...

    sealing feeders

Read on various forums of people using normal gloss paint to seal the inside of feeders. Also that it should be left to dry before use. My question is :- how long should it be left to dry. Being a signpainter I know that paint can take weeks to 'dry'. How long do most people who use gloss leave...
