    L plates or P plates

Every afternoon from about 2pm to about 4pm a large number of bees are seen orientating outside the hive. So, I'm wondering at what age a nurse bee leaves the hive for a peek outside, do they leave just once or over several days and for what purpose - maybe a p**? Are they older bees who will...

    100m dash

I have to move 10 large colonies about 100m as farmer has sold the field. He's offered part of another field to accommodate the hives as the new owner has plans and bees don't feature! Great news as the farm is convenient, well sheltered and there is plenty of forage etc and I don't want to...

    Slopping it on

Just got back from one of the apiaries. I decided to slop on the fondant as they were so short on stores, deciding to refuse most of the syrup feast in Sep/Oct. Also the girls have been flapping around outside for weeks. Fortunately all still alive and some even relaxing above the crownboard...

    Over wintering Queens

I had a number of poorly mated/not to my liking Queens earlier in the year. I have some mated Queens in mini nucs which I would like to keep as insurance for the Spring. I'm away on business at the weekend and therefore I don't want to re Queen at the moment. What is the best way to keep...

    Honey Labels

I understand from the honey regs that I can only label my jars of honey from one of the reserved descriptors. In my case it will be 'honey'. How do I differentiate between 'natural set' and 'soft set' for myself (they look similar) and more importantly, customers (they will look the same)? Can...

Hi What angle should a solar extractor be from horizontal? One of the plans I have suggest 15 degrees. Is this correct? It does seem less than I might have expected. I need to catch all the sun I have!

    Hornets

In the last few weeks my colonies in all my apiaries have been under attack. I do have wasp traps up that caught a few hornets, along with the wasps, earlier in the year. I haven't fed until dusk, also have good apiary hygiene. The hornets circle the hive and then pick off a flying bee mid air...

    Uggs

My lot have continued stinging my 'so last year' Uggs. Shame as they are so comfy . I spent half an hour pulling out the stings and gently washing them. Shows that the bees still respond to the sting pheramone a few days after the first sting. I'll see if it happens again. hopefully not...

    Oxalic Acid for a swarm

Hi How do you keep and how long can you keep the ready made up oxalic acid sold by the beek suppliers? I don't want to mix the stuff up from granules. My thoughts are that if I catch a swarm, I would want to treat it with oxalic acid whilst it is still broodless. I just know that my swarm would...
