First full inspection. Good and Bad.

The temperature pulled itself up to 16 degrees today, so we have managed a good inspection of both hives. Hive 1. This was a small late swarm last summer. We didn`t see HM, but there is BIAS on three frames, plus stores. Lots of pollen going in and the bees were very placid. Hive 2...

Is everyone as far behind last year as I am? (AT LEAST 2 weeks)

The only two days warm enough to inspect my hives have been work days, so haven`t opened them up at all since we fed fondant last year. Plenty of bees flying though. Have ordered another brood box , and have been making frames. Fingers crossed.

    Conwy Honey Fair

We had a good morning looking around Conwy and sampling other peoples honey. One chap had some honey infused with ginger, lovely. Have done some of mine with fresh root ginger. Good for winter colds. The weather wasn`t too bad, heavy drizzle at one point. Local ice -cream was good.

    I wonder whats happening?

I have three national hives, two doing really well, and one rather pathetic little colony that were going to be hived with one of the strong ones. Best Way To Store Frames.

I have one useless little hive that I will be combining with another hive at the weekend. This will leave me with a brood box of drawn out brood frames. I`m also hoping to extract two supers. What is the best way of storing these? I will give the super frames back to the bees to clean up, but...

    What next?

Well, oh checked the nuc this morning, and changed the opening to queen excluder mode. How can we tell if the swarm is prime or cast though? If its cast, we will need to change the opening again to let her fly. Sorry, but very new to this beekeeping lark.

    What next?

My oh has just rushed of and collected a swarm to prevent it being killed. Its about the size of a rugby ball. He collected it in a poly-nuc,and has put it in our out-apiery with the small vent open. I would like eventually to unite with a weak hive, but can`t find the queen in said hive...
