You may need to take specialist advice on the legal aspects. To do what you want to do, with the safeguards noted above regarding security, you will need to "enclose" some part of the common. In my experience, any form of enclosure of common land is illegal but I would urge you to seek competent legal advice on this.

There may also be trustees of the common or conservators or, heaven forbid, owners of the common (the Lord of the Manor) whose permission would be needed.

The last thing you want to do is spend a lot of money to set it all up then have a legal challenge that means you have to remove everything!

We won't have a legal issue. Our farm buildings are not a part of the common and are already sealed off from the public. Our hives will go in here. We have never had issues before with vandalism but obviously that's not a guarantee we won't in the future.

You are correct in theory about fencing off common land and the law does appear to be quite clear. In practice we have music festivals and fairs that fence off fairly large areas of the common and charge people for entrance. There have been objections to the council about this but they just shrugged. Go figure.
