    Honey extractors RPM

A very well known supplier has extractors and I have found this if it helps with expected rpm for extracting "The manual machines are highly geared, very easy to use and extremely robust. The electric machines are powered by an 80W reversible motor producing a maximum speed of 280rpm through a...

My bees went cranky around 3-4 weeks ago and I took 5 stings through suit and gloves, our dogs got stung and the gardener too! they were on OSR which is very close by, well within 1/2 a mile away. I took off two supers over two weeks and now the OSR has gone off we are able to enjoy the garden...

    Wasps

I watched a wasp darting back and forth over a bird water bath and it then stopped at the edge and sucked up some water, was there for a few minutes slurping away.

    which suit

I started off with all my kit from Fragile Planet and the suits were all in one white cotton, quite thick and with a fencing veil. I have had two issues so far, I got stung on the cheek through the veil as I was pressing against a bush and unknown to me a bee had landed on me and stung me! OUCH...

    Growing concern of stings

Sorry to hear about your stinging troubles with your bees. I am allergic to wasps and went into anaphylactic reaction after being stung in the mouth during a ride to work. Luckily I live in Cambridge and I was taken to Addenbrookes. From there I completed a course of desensitisation against wasp...

    How late for honey removal?

I have two hives doing really well but one with three supers of which two are being filled. I checked them this morning and at the most there are some frames with up to 60% capped cells in both sides of the frame. How late can I leave it before I get to the right amount so I can extract or is it...

    Swarms 2014

Came home from work Thursday to find a swarm I my garden low down near the ground in a small tight bush. Managed to scoop them them into a nuc box. Stragglers were in after three hours!! Unfortunately I haven't enough hive kit to house them. I had holed they'd have stayed and I was going to...

    Was this a mating flight?

Think I witnessed a mating flight but at first thought it was a swarm. The noise alerted me!! I could see them in the garden. Not a lot of bees but flying in circles and back and forth about 30 feet off the ground then by the time I got out into the garden they had gone and no noise at all. I...

Will a swarm last in a nuc box?

One of my colonies swarmed yesterday afternoon but were still clustered when I got home in the early evening. I managed to get them into a cordex nuc box and put in a frame with drawn comb but empty and an undrawn frame. I will be away all of today but wanted to know will they stay in the nuc...

    Easy Smoker Lighting

I have a green woodpecker nesting in an apple tree and it has been chipping out the centre of the trunk. I collected a full bucket of apple tree chips and use that along with egg carton and rolled up corregated cardboard. Lighting the egg carton is first job then light the underneath of the...

    queen excluder

I have recently changed from a horribly routed aluminium one with sharp un-deburred edges to a wooden framed wired one. On my last inspection there was less hassle removing it and no squashed bees on refitting it. Definitely worth the extra few quid.
