Out apiary available, Devon EX20 4JJ

A friend has a farm in Devon and would like to offer an apiary in some woods she has there. The site is a few miles west of Okehampton in a lovely rural spot. There is no direct access to the apiary, so you'd have to park and walk down. But when you need to get kit down or during harvest...

    Top bar hive –-introducing eggs

OK, I know TBHs are not the most popular on here, but I am using one for the first time this year and have a problem/query. I used the hive to house a healthy swarm that alighted in my apiary just before my holiday. I left the QE board near the entrance until they became used to it, but then...

Fermenting honey –-advice for mead, please

Dear All, I have had a bucket of honey I bought in last year start fermenting. I can only assume it was a dodgy seal as there is nothing wrong with the rest of the honey I have been selling alongside my own. Anyway, I have about 30lbs and rather than kiss goodbye to a considerable investment...

    Lavender/heather/apple blossom honey...

Does anyone out there have any of these unusual types of honey, preferably in the south east or East Anglia? My missus has started cosmetics and wants to try these specific honeys in her recipes. I'm in Essex, often in London and regularly in North Norfolk, so happy to collect some in...

    Warré hives

Does anyone know if someone makes frames for a Warré hive? I know they can be made – I have some that Dishmop gave me –-and I had planned to chop down some National top bars to make them up, but for many reasons have run out of time.

My Manley bottom is squashing my foundation...

As it says above. Put some foundation into a Manley as normal and put on a one piece bottom but the wax doesn't fit. Should I be using non-wired foundation so I can trim it, or am I doing something wrong? Answers on a postcard as usual and my thanks in advance for both your pearls of wisdom...

    beeswax cosmetic products

I have read a number of times that to sell beeswax cosmetics, you must have your recipe certified or use a certified recipe. I have heard there are courses available that once you have attended you are given licence to use their certified recipe(s). Does anyone know if this is the case or...

Clear glass punted bottles for making and showing mead

Can anyone tell me what is required for a mead bottle? I know it needs to have a punt of some description (though I've head it doesn't need to be very large) but should it be shouldered like a claret bottle, or sloped more like an armagnac? If you can also point me in the direction of the...

sloping hive stands –-some advice, please...

I bought some sloping hive stands in the T sale and have just discovered the ones in the sale DON'T HAVE LEGS. Apparently they are available with and without, I assume for those who use trestles or long stands, but I did not know this. Can anyone advise what I may do to put legs on them? Can...

    Oops!

http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/album.php?albumid=590 Extracting the last couple of supers last night and when draining, tipped the bucket over and handle hit a hard object and snapped. Bugger! :hairpull: Actually, quite old and alloy (judging by the insides) looks like mazak but probably...

    Looking for cut comb

Is there anyone out there in Essex/Herts or home counties in general who either produces (or knows someone who does) a good bit of cut comb? I have a customer who wants quite a lot of it and I won't be able to satisfy the demand. Failing that, if you have a smaller amount –even 10lbs or...

Discounts for selling honey via outlets

What level of discount do you offer to those selling your honey in their shop? I know the limited amount I had out last year did bring some punters direct to me, so there was a marketing benefit. However, many more live too far away to service easily. I get a decent rate for my honey from the...

    Swarmy season?

Despite this being a swarmy season for me (I did AS in good time this year, but they would still swarm) I have had very few calls concerning swarms. I've had a lot of calls about bumbles, but honest to goodness swarms have been very thin on the ground. Whereas, in the last two years, I've had...
