    Demaree pick up

Is it relevant Fourth year beek and still a beginner and this is a fascinating thread. I don't think I have had a perfect AS yet despite best precautions. Fascinated by the idea of transferring HM into a box on the original site without any brood whatsoever to mimic a true swarm but does the...

    Artificial swarm does it work

Got it, thanks very much. This thread, although not proven, answers many questions regarding failed A/s's over the last couple of years. I don't feel quite so inadequate now.

    Grass Cutting

I think it depends entirely on the bees. I have six colonies in my garden and both my wife and I cut the grass with a petrol mower to within 1 yard of the hives. We have been doing this for three years and no stings. If they are very active I have, on a couple of occasions, suited up as a...

    polynucs

Please remember, if overwintering or keeping bees in a polynuc with the circular entrance discs, to secure in the correct position required with a drawing pin to ensure that it does not move. Unfortunately I didn't and a full box of overwintered bees got confined to quarters for 5 or six days...

Where do queens go to the toilet?

Apparently the three weeks much have been up today because according to my wife, the inhabitants of six hives did a bombing run on a full line of washing today and I won't be wearing a white shirt for a while.

    Busy Bees

Swarm, No I don't intend taking any more honey, what they forage now is theirs. just concerned that while I am away, if the flow stops, I am leaving it late to feed as only back in October. Only been keeping bees for three years but have never encountered this before when putting wet supers on...

    Busy Bees

Harvested in August, treated with Maqs and then before starting winter feeding, placed the wet supers above a feeder board for the bees to clean out. To my surprise, instead of emptying them, about four hives have partly filled and capped the supers. I am going away for a few weeks so really...

    Uniting

I have looked at past threads but can't see the answer. when re-uniting an AS, does the hive that is moved (abt 1.5m) back to the original site have a problem with bees returning to "yesterday's" position. Also, if uniting two Q+ colonies (removing the lower Q) with Q+ colony on top, I assume...

    Double Brood question

Thanks for the advice....think I will do as Enrico/Rab suggest and remove a couple of frames of stores to free up some space and freeze/store until next needed. Jury is till out on whether to cut them down to a single box but I have time to think about it. Thanks again.

    Double Brood question

I overwintered on double brood due to a late unite (queenless in Early Oct). All seems well after its inspection last week with a surprising amount of sealed stores left over. I am thinking of reducing back to single brood but am concerned that if I super (soon) that they will move up the stores...
