Is there any problem with splitting a hive directly into a full brood box instead of a nucleus? I have a hive right now that is bursting with bees, and I have a spare brood box that I could use.
Also, when would it be considered too late to do the split and still allow them time to build up for winter?
This is my first year keeping bees so there are some specifics such as this I am still not sure about.

It is full of problems. Main problem is that you should learn how the normal hive grow up and how to handle it. Ifyou split it, you learn nothing.

It is June, and winter is not coming.

Beekeeping is such that at the beginning of season hive grows and some day it is rippen to make honey yield. Before main yield the colony tends to swarm/propagate.

A strong hive, 4-6 boxes, grows better than two week hives.
What actually happens, it is a long story.
