Bring along a bee buddy, they usually say 'there she is' before you've started looking :D

Borrow a child and ask them to look for her, the always seem to find the queen in a matter of seconds.

If I get on the edge of my nerves searching for, I place frame with brood from other hive and come after about half an hour. The queen is there.. I didn't invent it, just use what learned.
But usually I find her when needed without frame shifting..
That's interesting. Does it matter what kind of brood - open or emerging brood?

The worse ones to find are the small ones. I had a queen I wanted to replace. She got through the excluder easy. Paired frames in separate boxes didn't work either. In the end I had to wait to see which box had bees using their Nasanov glands and fanning. All the rest got put back into the hive and the fanning bees were shared out into all the empty boxes. After a while only one box had fanning bees. The queen was in there and was removed. Took ages though.
