Spotted this today whilst strimming near the hives. It was about 3 inches long.

Personally I think it's a man eating caterpillar but it may have another name.

The elephant hawk moth is a beautiful thing. I've seen the caterpillars but never the moth.

Little girl has a chrysalis of one at the moment, keeps checking it 2-3 times a day waiting for it to emerge

Cool - well the state of the garden it doesn't surprise me there are elephants hiding in there somewhere.

Yep! Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar. We get them around the Rosebay Willowherb. Moths are a sort of tan and pink colour.

.
Moths fly a lot here on lilacs when they bloom

I have reared many larvae to moths.

Haha so did I. My daughter had one called Wormsley :)

Rosebay Willowherb is their favourite. Such a beautiful moth and caterpillar that I put a small patch a corner to attract them to the garden. As well as Fushia, caterpillars will also make do with Gooseberry.

Ah - we have no fuchsias but it was heading with determination towards my gooseberry bushes.
