    Greeters

Noticed a few greeters approaching the apiary recently. Not the sort of behaviour to encourage so they need sorting. Problem is that I have suspicions where they are coming from but I'm not 100% sure and it's always possible there could be more than one. Any ideas or strategies to confirm...

SHB found in 16 italian apiaries so far...

BBKA have circulated a statement, probably on their website soonish. There is some news from the various government bodies. There are 16 identified apiaries with SHB, all within the closer 20 km zone around the originally identified infection. 600 imports from Italy have been inspected , no SHB...

Food Programme covers "Bees and the City - the Urban Bee story" on iplayer now for the next year: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04jhmhh Being the BBC they have to justify the travel expenses, so we get most on Manhattan and Copenhagen. There's a short piece from South London and an...

    BBC swarm collecting

Short piece on collecting swarms in the suburbs. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-28004876 Might be a useful link for association websites, decent explanation of what a swarm is and what to do about it. It is in Washington DC, why don't the BBC do this basic information stuff closer to home?

Apishield - wasp or hornet trap floor

I saw the new Apishield hornet trap in April Beecraft, p44 but details on the Vita web site if you don't get the mag. It appears to be marketed as an Asian Hornet trap, but claimed to be effective against wasps, robber bees, even wax moths. Interesting idea, anybody aware of anything along...

    Varroa in February

In one hive I seem to have a varroa problem. A drop test over the last week and a bit produced over 10 a day. The hive only 2 metres away dropped no varroa in the same period. The NBU calculator estimates 10 a day in February as mites in the thousands. I'm not entirely sure the variables at this...

    Pollen in the supers

I have a super with quite a lot of pollen left after extraction. I don't have room to freeze it, I don't need it for winter stores. Is there any way to store it until spring? Is any treatment useful to stop it going mouldy in storage?

    Forager/Nurse bees epigenetics

Report in the Guardian today of work on the epigenetics of bees. There is evidence for the reversibility of the transition from nurse bee to forager and the reverse is associated with epigenetic tags. Claimed to be the first clear association of behaviour and reversible epigenetics...

    Collective honey extraction

It appears someone is trying to set up a honey extraction collective in central London. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/blog/2012/aug/17/honey-processing-urban-beekeepers Worthwhile? Or is carrying a full super around on public transport going to be more of a faff than borrowing an...

    How to Grow a Planet

Caught up with my time shifted copy of How to Grow a Planet part 2 this evening. Originally shown Tuesday BBC2 but still available on iPlayer and I see it's on Friday on BBC2 Scotland and then again after midnight on BBC HD http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01c8b5t . This one is about the...

Getting bees under the crown board.

When I treated with apiguard through the recent warm spell I saw all the bees coming and going and thought, great, lots of winter stores coming in. What I didn't see was that one colony was building it's own wild comb in the apiguard gap for a couple of weeks. They then filled that comb with...
