Thanks for posting that, very helpful.
This will be my third year of bee keeping, when I first saw behaviour like that I was worried it may be robbing. Although I’m never totally certain what is going on when I see so much activity on a hive, I’ve learned not to panic, it usually calms down after a short while.
I’m looking forward to watching the bees this year to see what I can now read from their behaviour. I’ve missed them while they have hunkered down for winter.

Why do you have 4x1 going from landing board to ground ?
 
It's the tunnel entrances...i pull them out when this is happening to save any congestion and put them back in when they calm down..i do however on some colonies have a piece of wood like that all the time for any chilled bees that miss the landing board and land on the ground...i have sat and viewed the entrances with these ladders in place and the bees that can not regain flight climb up them and into the hive.
