I thought that but there is an obvious sign of a strike under the bird feeder a metre or so away

Looks more like a fox to me. In had hens in the garden killed by decapitation and one of he heads was missing and the rest left with thereo heads off ... Fox was to blame.

Could be. I’ve seen a buzzard strike a crow on the ground. I’ve heard peregrines the last few weeks.

Foxes have had hens. They take them away.
They take them when they have chance but will kill them all, take what they can carry then come back for the rest .. it may have taken one of a pair and not had time to come back for the other ....classic fox kill with the head bitten off I'm afraid. That's assuming you have plenty of garlic growing and it's not the Vampire Chicken at work !

If the victim was a pigeon then encourage the marauder as much as you can ....... goodbye peas and cabbages and cauliflowers and brussels sprouts - they'll eat anything
