I was recently speaking with some bee keepers and have been lead to believe that yes some QX's are different sizes and this is not neccessarily a mistake.

I was informed that 3 sub-species of worker honey bee won't fit through the space which are the Russian, Irish Black and the French Black honey bee. Have anyone been told anything different.

The French black is a small bee and pass easily through the excluder, I know I have some, so that is clearly not the case.

I think those strains you mention might be the ones most easily able to get through a queen excluder.

Queen excluder holes can vary in size but they will most probably all allow workers through but not allow queens through.
