I use Esnipe - which is not free but works well.

I guess I lose 75% of all auctions I bid on: but the ones I do win tend to be quite good bargains... There are a lot of sellers who could not sell water to a thirsty man in a desert...and end their auctions at silly times.
Long may they flourish.

Of course, when I am selling...

With Auctionsniper I set my max plus a few pence. Often I win, sometimes I lose but nothing is rare on eBay!
