Beehive roofs

I'm building some national beehives and I was wondering why they have metal roofs. I was going to put shed felt on mine unless I'm missing something.

Not sure, though maybe they are often used upside down to place a box in, and the corners would wear through quickly.

That makes sense. The metal is hard wearing, the felt would rip.

I use pond liner. Light weight, waterproof (obviously), easy to fit and cheap. I make the roofs out of pallet boards and line the inside with 25mm polystyrene

I use a mixture of felt and metal roofs. The downside to metal roofs is bees when they're wet bees get stuck to them.
I put my roofs upside down on the ground (uneven stone pavers) to stack boxes on and have never had roof felt rip yet.

Make it a deep roof and glue 50mm PIR inside it

Felt tends to get very hot and soften , felt is easier to damage at any time of year.

Metal is used to add weight as well...although I still put half breeze block on my hives

Shed felt works well. I have one,
HEAVY, heavy, heavy.

I made up 10 a couple of days ago. Shed felt on top with a good helping of sheep’s wool to act as insulation.
