    Kim Flottum on Varroa Resistance

There is no silver bullet... But selectively breeding stronger mites and propping up weak bees by chemical treatments is no way to move forward... Look at Seeley's findings on the bees in Ithaca (Cornell has article on their site) ..with the right selective pressure bees will squeeze thru that...

Small cell (&/or foundationless) small bees experiences?

Pollen is like sauerkraut so perhaps they entomb it if the fermentation takes it past what they consider good for them... I have yet to see that, I will need to keep an eye out! Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk

Small cell (&/or foundationless) small bees experiences?

Unfortunately you're unlikely to get long-term funding for such a project. Also my cubit is different from your cubit and that is how bees build comb - the measurements they use are from their own bodies, which us beekeepers have controlled for over a hundred years, so it will take a while...

Small cell (&/or foundationless) small bees experiences?

Perhaps I have advantages that I forgot to mention: -I run rose OSB's (and although they are a 'national' frame) they aren't as deep therefore less chance of comb getting messed up & no need to wire or any of that carry on -I have always kept a small spirit level in my bee toolkit to level...

Small cell (&/or foundationless) small bees experiences?

Achieving small cells with 35mm spacing is a no go as it is what they have been working with for years... I trimmed all my sidebars down so that now the spacing between midribs will be 32mm ...I will let you know how that goes. For those saying small cell is a myth, yes it isn't a silver bullet...

    organic/Naturally

not nonsense.. just not the silver bullet people are always searching for... there isnt one, just a whole natural system that needs to be working together and letting drone cells be drone sized and worker be nbatural worker is part of it.

    organic/Naturally

Counting varroa is not the point... I refuse to partake in that. I dont count nosema spores or acarine mites but I do take note when symptoms appear just in case action is required. The point in not treating is to let the natural microbial balance within the hive stabilise and then start...

Using starter strips - is it a recipe for disaster?

Bees build parallel combs so starter strips will form nice straight natural comb as long as they have a guide ie. Placed between 2 drawn out combs or full sheets of foundation. If using it for swarm control keep an eye that they don't just pack it with nectar as that tells you they are really in...

    does size matter

Most bees at the right time, doing the right thing= more honey Loads of bees during a nectar drought = sad beekeeper ___________________________________ brothermoo.wordpress.com

Brace comb under frames in brood box

Sometimes they just want a ladder in place to make it easier to get onto the combs (and handy cells to offload) ___________________________________ sent from my smartphone.. although it doesn't filter my not-so-smart comments

    User status

Lol A brief reading of this forum will in fact show a direct correlation between complaints/gripes/aggression and the user status! Not in all cases I admit but a snorted in my tea at your post drstitson

    Why put supers on top?

If you did run a swarm into a stack of boxes I suspect you would see them start their broodnest right in the top box and it would gradually expand downward and at the same time honey would be placed above in the vacated cells, thus why we super. Some like to nadir, but that is just to allow the...

    I panicked...

If you have access to a mated queen then you didn't panic you thought on your feet. If you don't have a queen or chance of getting one mated in your area I would suggest double brood for now then there is plenty of space for her majesty to lay and when you can get a queen you just need to split...

Sorry I can't find the actual project that I read about, google not helping, it must have been referred to in a research paper. ___________________________________ sent from my smartphone.. although it doesn't filter my not-so-smart comments

    primorski bees

I think imports undo any attempts at highly specific breeding programs. But the honeybee open mating system is designed to negate inbreeding so its hard unless you go the II route! ___________________________________ sent from my smartphone.. although it doesn't filter my not-so-smart comments

One strap around the breast underneath the lip and two straps attached to that.. worked a charm and I was worried because one of the nights was quite windy. ___________________________________ sent from my smartphone.. although it doesn't filter my not-so-smart comments

    primorski bees

You can breed for resistance from any breed, take the best of your local stock (team up with others in your area) and raise your own queens, it'll be cheaper and more rewarding! ___________________________________ sent from my smartphone.. although it doesn't filter my not-so-smart comments
