Single charged queen / swarm cell spotted!

Hi everyone, I just did my second full inspection, after two weeks of receiving a nuc of Carnolians. Good weather has arrived in the West Country! I'd be grateful for some advice. The summary of my inspection is as follows - I would remind people that I am a novice. Frame 10 - Being built out...

    Bee sting protocol

This is good advice. New members should be asked about any history of Anaphylaxis and obviously if they have, the risk needs to be assessed and they need to be counselled accordingly (try trainspotting instead!!). Chlorpheniramine and relatives take too long to work for Anaphylaxis, but are...

    Spike in activity early evening?

Quick one - over the last couple of days there's been steady activity with pollen coming in, and things quietening down late afternoon. Just now (17.30hrs) I noticed a sudden spike in activity - see video - there are lots of bees departing and arriving, and a few Nasanov fanning at the entrance...

    Should I remove feeder?

Thank you - in fact as soon as I had posted that message that alert came through. I'll remove the feeder, but watch them very closely to make sure that they continue to bring food in. I'll inspect at the one week mark.

    Should I remove feeder?

Dear all - quick one - I have newly installed hive of Carnolian bees, and they seem to be doing well. I installed them from a healthy 5 frame nuc last Friday and so there (were) 5 frames of new foundation. The weather as you know has been awful, and it's been very cold, so I put a top feeder on...

Installing a feeder on a crown board

Dear All, A couple of questions please - I have a WBC hive and the Crown board has two oblong holes with 2 Porter escapes. I'm due to collect my first nuc tomorrow, and will need to feed them once they are ensconced. I have a round rapid feeder. I'm assuming that I place the hole of the feeder...

Two different types of bees in adjacent hives?

Morning all - I have no apologies for asking a basic question - I'm a beginner! Would there be a problem if a hive containing Carniolan bees was sited adjacent to a Buckfast or native bee colony? I suspect not, but I rather not start a local bee war. The reason that's a possibility is that I'm...

    Yet another newbie!

Hi - I'm down in Wellow. We've been there a couple of years, and I'm lucky enough to have a bit of land at the back that's ideal to start. I've joined the Bath Beekeepers assoc and also there's a chap in the village who can help if (when) I run into trouble!!

    Yet another newbie!

Hi everyone, I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of my new hives and looking to collect a couple of nucs later this month. Do please excuse me if I ask some daft questions! After all - "experience is the name that people generally call their mistakes" Cheers Jon L (Bath)
