    thankyou for all the info . I did as Ian123 suggested and used some pine needles in the smoker ,all worked nicely . and yes, blunt spike i had uptil that moment ,inspected all the frames apart from the offending super .

    Best untreated timber for hive construction?

    HI, I`m making a horizontal hive and was going to visit my local sawmill . traditionally cedar would be the choice . Does anyone have experience with other types of rough sawn timber ,longeviety being the main issue. perhaps redwood or larch ?

    14 x 12 sounds about right ,I recon a gradual swap over as frames need replacing .but initially my national frames straight in. thankyou for help

    I see ,so no need to remove the bottom wooden bars .Bees will just add to them .thus i can gradually swap to deeper frames or just topbars . as time goes on. forgot to mention both my current hives are using national SN1 . thankyou for your reply.
