    Apidea extension boxes

I have just bought a batch of Apidea super / brood extension boxes and am curious about the 2 narrow slots in the top of the boxes. Does anyone know if these serve any particular purpose or are just a manufacturing quirk? I am happy with the Apideas; I'm just curious.

    Queen piping

I brought a bunch of newly populated Apideas home last night to keep in the cool and darker garage for a few days so that I could keep them humid with misting through the grills. I went out this morning to check and distinctly heard a queen piping. I had read about this but never experienced...

    Heather Honey Labels

I believe that heather honey is usually not as prone to crystallising as some other varieties but, just on the off chance that it might happen, I wonder if members add / modify labels on their jars to alert customers as to how to treat the honey if it does happen.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

If I remember correctly, the full-sized colonies went for between £150 and £170 but only saw one 3-frame nuc bring sold (in a corrugated plastic box) and it went for £200

What did you do in the Apiary today?

There certainly were lots of items for sale, just under 500 if I remember correctly, but many of the items were close to or above the brand new price so I had to exercise a lot of restraint. It was a long old day for an old codger like me to be on my feet but lots of interesting chats with other...

    Propolis Query

Would your good lady be willing to share her advice on how to prepare the propolis tincture?

    Propolis Query

I have been asked by a lady that I supply with honey if I could supply her with propolis. What sort of quantity / container / price / advice would anyone suggest who has experience of providing it?

    Honey Creaming machines

I bit the bullet and bought a 50 litre unheated Lyson creamer, second hand but barely used, and it is currently churning away nicely. Just one question though: how long do you leave it to churn for, is there an optimum time or is it a case of the more the merrier?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

I use these too and find that, although there is a little more "slack" between jars than I would prefer, they comfortably take 11 one pound jars.

    Nicot History

Dho!! Memo to self: read what is written, not what you hoped to read.

    Nicot History

Thanks for that; I keep on gaining more and more information from your posts. Whereabouts did you glean that information from, I would be interested to read it.

    Nicot History

Thanks for that, I wasn't aware of the French plastics firm so that's one step closer to discovering the origin of Nicot. I imagine that the firm should be able to tell me the origin of the Nicot name. I wonder if they will be able to reply to a query in english or will I have to resurrect my...

    Nicot History

A small group of our local beekeeping club have started a low-key queen rearing group and, to date, have had encouraging success. Between us, we have previously tried a range of approaches but are currently using the Nicot system which seem, so far, to meet our needs. I was wondering where the...

    Honey Creaming machines

Feedback from existing users would be welcome. I have an offer of an unheated 50 litre model; does anyone have experience of using that version, can it be used for a part load and are they straightforward to clean after use?

    O A dehydrated 99.6%

Neat i.e. glacial acetic (ethanoic for the purists) acid does have the habit of solidifying into a glassy-looking solid when it gets cold so I make up an 80% solution during the warmer months for use during Winter. I must confess that I quite like the smell but it can be nasty stuff if handled...

    Soft set runny honey

I managed to find a wine chiller for a few quid at a local garage sale and it worked a treat for soft set honey. When it died, however, it was a struggle to get any of the local Council recycling centres to accept it. In the end, I had to get a special dispensation from someone at Council HQ...

    Honey Room Floor

I have a wooden shed that has been kitted out as an extraction room. The floor has been lined with chipboard but I wanted to cover it with something that will make it easier to wipe up the odd spillage. What would members suggest as a permanent fix?

    Making ekes

I agree; I bought my daughter one for her last birthday and, although you still get the odd broken plank, we have had more success than with a crow bar.

Number of hives sustained by OSR

A colleague has been approached by a farmer who has planted / is planting around 90 acres of OSR and has offered to share the site. How many hives would members believe such a site would support?
