What to do with an over wintered super

Nadiring would certainly have made life more straight forward. I'll have plenty to feed back / nadir this Autumn with the surplus stores and syrup. From others, I like the bungalow vs cathedral analogy! The drone brood is a small proportion, to be clear. I just don't like shutting them in.

What to do with an over wintered super

I see what you mean, daft move. I’ve got some foundation so will substitute some of the stores as suggested. The shallow issue came about from a half fill come the end of August so left it on for them. Did similar on another hive with a standard super but I’m beginning to think that the early...

What to do with an over wintered super

Hello All, In a similar vein, I'd be interested in the opinion when faced with the following scenario in one of my hives. First inspection was yesterday; the mercury hit 15-16C and it wasn't blowing a hooley or hosing it down for the first time this year. 14x12 on bottom - only 2-3 frames...

What paint/sealer do you use for cosies?

Personally, I'd avoid a masonry paint. This type of paint, almost always water based, performs by soaking into the substrate. I've always used Pro Cote in a spray can. Yes, it's a bit more costly but it's also very quick and clean and has lasted well on my cosies...

    Mildew/mould

A great set up and very neatly executed W0otz. I do similar, albeit a little more Heath Robinson, with either PIR or a slab of rockwool above as I fear the creation of a cold spot above my fondant pot (and ensuing risk of condensation dripping in amongst the middle frames)

    Wax moth 'worms' eat polythene

    Best honey warmer

Depending on one's budget, the electrical bits'n'bobs lurking in the back of the shed coupled with an ebay purchase or two, the light bulb warming cabinet has my backing. My [effective if a little Heath Robinson] ply / PIR cabinet, batten holder, small 40W lightbulb, timer and oven temp probe...

Wax moth are rampant this year

Thanks for the reply. Will smoke and ratchet them up good and tight.

Wax moth are rampant this year

Morning all ... having just started my main extraction, I've already found the dreaded moth and its larvae. The supers were stacked in the garage on the smooth floor and draped in dust sheets. No interest from wasps or bees so, one might assume, relatively safe. I've had problems in the past...

A ban on smacking children in Wales: a personal testimony.

    yellow pollen today

On the East Sussex / Kent border, we have daffs, primrose, celandine and wood anemones out. I was sent a picture of a bluebell fully out down the road this morning. Odd given that the average temperature has been none too interesting!

Dead Bees - What's the best plan, going forward?

Hi Boston, thanks for the note. I will have a closer look at the combs on the failed hive and report back with some pics. The 200 bees were on the second hive that I fear is failing (and had the entrance block pushed in which allowed a good gander). We had 10C yesterday and the one good hive...

Dead Bees - What's the best plan, going forward?

Hi Amari ... thanks for your thoughts. The marked Q was one of the last ladies standing, sadly. There was a thick layer of dead bees on OMF ... Wasps were a real pain in the autumn. My traps were chocka block with them and could have done with refreshing more regularly, at a guess.

Dead Bees - What's the best plan, going forward?

Thanks Apple. Yep, entrance pretty much fully open in the dying hive which is still a mystery. What was interesting, I thought, was that my last inspection on the deadout found no more than half a dozen bees, one of which was HMQ, sadly. I agree on the "nasty" prognosis as the three hives are...

Dead Bees - What's the best plan, going forward?

Hello all, It is a well discussed topic, I know, but I couldn't find anything in previous chats that quite answered my questions. Sadly, November saw the loss of 1 out of my 3 hives. Suspecting varroa (despite late Aug. / early Sep. Apiguard) it crystallised my planned December OA vape plan...

    Cutting PIR

Some of us are lucky enough to own table saws, skill saws, plunge saws, guide rails and dust extractors yet for many a Stanley knife, straight edge and tape measure will do amply. For 50mm PIR I flip it over and repeat on the reverse and snap to leave a clean cut face. Job done.

    Rugby- Wallabies v's All Blacks

When I was growing up it always used to be " Rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen. Football is a gentleman's game played by hooligans." That said, a game against the local nick was the exception to the rule!

Straight forward bearding or something more sinister?

Well .... off they went! Quite a spectacular sight, it has to be said. On the up-side, they set up shop in an adjacent ancient plum tree. Managed to catch and re-house. Spied HM (good omen being QE2’s official b-day?) in the process and now, I guess, it’s fingers crossed that I am the proud...

Straight forward bearding or something more sinister?

Morning Gilberdyke, hives are in full sun from about 8 AM until 1 PM then in dappled shade for the afternoon/evening. Last weekend, things did look pretty hectic. Very little empty space in the brood box Some honey a lot of pollen, capped brood and eggs but not huge amounts of space (sorry...

Straight forward bearding or something more sinister?

morning! Definitely not blocked and on the larger entrance hall so thinking about just removing the clock in its entirety as per earlier suggestions.
