What did you do in the Apiary today?

Modified my Swienty based long hive by adding a couple of "lifts" to allow supers to be placed above the brood area to test whether this will allow stores to be placed there rather than a slow placement on a horizontal basis. Time will tell regarding this niggle I have had but at least I will...

    Bee sting protocol

From what I recall, if you have a meeting at an apiary there should be a Risk Assessment done beforehand and there should be a first aider. Likely why a lot of associations are put off holding them and an education and social gathering missed due to rules. I am happy to stand corrected on this...

    Paynes Nucleus leaking syrup

I had the same with a Swienty polystyrene feeder some years ago and the wasps loved it!! The syrup literally oozed through the walls. Now I make my own Miller feeders in wood and paint the inside of the reservoir with several coats of gloss paint and have no problems.

    Silvercrest jam maker damage

I use mine for warming honey in 30lb tubs with an InkBird thermostat as the main control is broken and it's on at full all the time. I put the bucket in on top of the grid (personal experience taught me that the grid is essential as even with water jacket the element will melt a small hole in...

Posca pen wearing off. What's better?

Have always found it strange that out of the 5 colours for years 2 are not suitable for those with colour blindness!! I don't worry about year dates but use an easily spotted fluorescent colour and put a dot of that colour on the front of the broodbox with the year written in the same colour...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Good idea to go drab - blends in and not so vulnerable to theft, Still can't quite understand why people go for the bright stand out shades when hives are nicked

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

My drip tray in the solar extractor is a large aluminium tray with an exit slot at the bottom with the tray at an angle. I stuff this with J-cloth and the collecting vessel is a silicone loaf or cake mould which the wax pops out of when cold. The wax is really clean using this and when the...

Selling candles to shop for resale

Like the deodorant which in the "How to use" section tells you to push up bottom. The mind boggles and brings tears to the eyes.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

This morning got all organised for inspections with nucs at the ready just in case needed for splits and went out to load up the car and go. However it's blowing a hooley since lunchtime and has turned to 9C but feels a lot colder in the wind. Even though it's 9 days since last inspection...

    WSBKA Auction 2024

To get the best price I would advertise them as high-tech essential through-draught free-flow hive ventilation aids. If they have been lit sell as pre-owned carbon coated (one end) and carbon capture device. Pop on a reserve of 20p per box - you might be lucky and get top estimate of 22p !!!
