Ejected larvae

I’m helping a beekeeper who has 2 hives with nearly fully formed larvae being ejected on both. See pic. One explanation offered is its drone larvae, any other explanations. Both hives have adequate stores & been treated for varroa (vaped).

Or don't want to waste resources feeding them when they're of no (or limited) use?

Often during the winter you’ll find the odd drone larvae/pupae laid up in patches of worker brood. I just think it’s the queen laying up the gaps. I’d still be inclined to check the obvious though like stores/treatment if possible.

Check wing development for DWV, as varroa prefer drone brood with its longer pupation. If wings are shrivelled, varroa may still be at work.

Their eyes don't look like drone's eyes. Might be hygenic behaviour at work - getting rid of infected/infested pupae.

You have one or the other but regardless ,having bees that know whst to do in either case is a big plus point.
