We may evaluate frame sizes so that Langstroth and UK Commercial are 100%.

The area revieles real difference between frames.

Another factor is number of frames

In wintering hight is an advantage, but Dadant is not so much bigger than Langstroth. I wonder.

it is 30% more. Lang normal + medium is 170 units. It is bigger than Dadants 130 units.

I do not know, how to calculate famous "brood and half".

Did not realise their were so many, i can see a EU standard beehive being designed in Brussel this very moment ( Honey supers designed in Strasbergh though)

Really!! Yeah, they have even standardized even bananas and cucumbers. Why not hive boxes.- But what is the advantage?

Scandinavia uses USA Langstroth standard. Eastern Europe has really its own.

Problem or advantage: Hive furnitures are very long living and they still work.

Like my friend, many have donated to her beekeeping stuff. She has no money to "standardize" his systems. Boxes work well together even they have 10 different out dimensions.

I compared the effective areas of frames. Impossible to do that without line format

Many are so proud about their unique frame size...Based on what?.

.

No proudness here I just use what everybody else uses locally. I only know 1 person within 50 miles of me who doesn't use national.
After a week with Chris b I said if I was starting again I would be on poly langs but I am not so its national for me. Size matters I have found so extra deep 14x12 is what I prefer with the bigger area of frame.

With muswell when he says he is amazed at how many types their are. Add that to the trees and roofs and it seems it's only bee keepers who worry about hives, bees will live anywhere that suits their needs of space, protection and location.

Well, if a British Standard specification was such a good idea, what would be the problem with having a €uronorm definition, so that you could be assured that the Polish frames you buy will fit the Spanish hive and the Italian extractor you already had? And the nuc of French varroa-resistant bees could of course also arrive on €uronorm frames. How terrible would that be?

The British Standard 'national' design wasn't imposed (well, not recently anyway), and seems to be actually popular - not least by virtue of its standardisation!

Langstroth might be the world's most popular hive, but actually, its simply not standardised ... and that causes consumer problems - or in €urojargon "restricts the free flow of goods within the Union". I could well understand them getting involved - I'm surprised they haven't already!

I am not a fan of political union in Europe but as a trade zone I'm all for it, and why not develop a Eurohive.
Market forces will decide if it has "legs".

UK Commercial (Honey) was originally 16 inches by 6 inches which in mm would be 406 ….. 152 …...... 62

And will state what size and shape those legs would have to be lol

.
It is like with car spare parts. You have to be very sure what serial number you are buying.

It is not EU fault.

And no matter anyway - as they would have fallen off within six months and the only 'approved' European manufcturer will have gone bankrupt and b*ggered off to his luxury retreat in the Cayman islands - but not before selling all the patterns, jigs and patents to a Korean company specialising in bamboo steamers and lucky waving puddy tats.

I think you are confusing international harmonisation of dimensional standards with celebrity 'designer' licensing ... they don't work the same way!
