The "stuff" appears to have legs so not the mating sign

No idea, but could it be a lot of eggs that have been produced all at once and have got stuck? (probably daft idea, but it does happen to chickens!)

Apart from her being a bit dead now.

Any thoughts on what the stuff is on her backside?

Saw something like this in the past, on a video about instrumental insemination, where the operator had allowed mucus instead of just sperm get into the syringe. It dried like a glue plug and blocked the exit for egg laying. It looked like the photo if my memory serves (very badly). They 'unplugged' it and she was fine after but they said it could have been fatal. Can't remember where I saw video. Or.......... I could just be way off the mark! Just a thought.
