    How hot is too hot?

We are planning to attend a local show next Saturday to sell honey and to talk to people about bees. The star of the show is usually the observation hive but I’m seeing forecast of temperatures over 35. Whilst I’m hoping that this might be a daily Star “phew what a scorcher” headline what sort...

    Candle making advice

Have a looks at this you tube video The key is a steady even speed in and out of the wax and then frequent rolling. I use 2 sheets of glass and apply even pressure along the length of the candle

My beekeeping days may be over

You could consider immunotherapy. I’m 2 years into my treatment after a very similar reaction to yours. I have been stung “in the field” since then with no reaction. One year to go....

Growing runner beans as a late forage!

I also grow my runner beans for a late crop and was very happy to see lots of bees both bumble and honey on them. Closer examination however showed that the bumble bees were biting a hole at the back of the flower to get at the nectar and by passing their pollination duties, the honey bees were...

    Certan

Does anyone use certan to protect stored supers from wax moth? Thinking of trying it this year as I really don't like using acetic acid and don't have a spare freezer to put them in Thanks

Does vinegar in syrup stop mould?

Just making up another batch of syrup and as I'm not going to be able to visit the bees for a few days I want to put a larger volume on than usual. I don't have any thymol to add but have heard that vinegar works to prevent mould growth. Does anyone else add vinegar? Thank you

    What could be happening?

The no eggs came first. We left it a few inspections, all the sealed brood went and nothing came to replace. We could have added a frame of eggs from another hive but wanted to combine going into winter

    What could be happening?

Hello One of my hives is up to something and I would be gratefully for advice. The hive in question is the result of a combination made at the end of August. We combined a hive where the queen had stopped laying (no eggs or brood for weeks and wall to wall stores in the brood frames). Both...

    Best filter medium

I put the wax in a pop sock in the slow cooker for the first go through which does a pretty good job. It then gets further filtered through a nappy liner fasted to the end of a large baked bean can.

Where do you sell your honey

My hives are in the garden so process and bottle in the kitchen (but we have builders extending the utility room at the moment so no extraction for a few weeks!) I sell at £5 for 12oz at work and to friends of family - family get it free. Have just sold 12 jars to a local deli/cafe but it's in...
