    Artificial swarm questions....

Sorry to jump on this thread, but I pretty much had the same question. I was thinking you could perform an AS and then just make the old hive hopelessly queenless, then reunite soon after? But it sounds like this won’t work? The hive in question for me has several queen cells and we performed...

    GasVap

I finally got around to using this at the weekend and was pleased with it. i just drilled a hole in a block of wood and placed that over the feeding holes in the crown board and vaped from the top. A great small and light piece of kit.

I have a spare brood box, could I add that on, drill a small hole in it, put the crown board on top and vape top down that way?

Thanks for the advice and the extra heads up on the maker. This will be my first time with OA and I am rather apprehensive about it. One concern I have is that I have painted WBC hives, will the pipe melt the landing board?

Has anybody ever bought one from these guys? I placed an order for one over a week ago. I have not received any order confirmation at all, although they have taken the money. I emailed to enquire about my order, no response… I ordered as it was reviewed by a well known bee keeper but clearly...

Is this a Giant Asian Hornet?

Thank you for the replies. I have let it go but unfortunately the very edge of one of its wings must have got singed before I caught it so it can’t fly properly and will probably succumb to the cold tonight.

    Managing uncapped frames in supers

Do you feed the honey back as it is or do you mix it with water?

    Extraction cut off date?

When do people normally leave the bees to forage just for themselves? I realise this question depends on local conditions and nectar sources but is there a general rule? Last year I extracted in mid July but given the terrible weather my honey levels are much lower than last year and it’s...

    Signs of accepted caged queen?

Update - Just checked the hive for the first time since I popped the tabs and the Queen is alive and happily walking all over the frames. I didn’t check for eggs or anything as the hive was very hostile as usual. Now hoping to see a big improvement in 6 week. Thank you for the advice, maybe I...

    Signs of accepted caged queen?

As mentioned on the basis of the first advice I popped the tabs. I will go and see if they accepted her in a few days. If they have killed her and I decide to go down the nuc route with another queen how long is it before you can then reunite back to the hive? Doing this would the leave the...

Time to get the camera out againAnd spread some joy

Nice clean frames! Are they brand new this year? Mine after a few months are always coated with propolis and wax on the top bars. Also the box would have quite a number is perfectly pressed bees on the side. 😬

    Signs of accepted caged queen?

I shook them off. I will take a video tomorrow, I take it there is no issue leaving her in the cage for another day or so until somebody gives me confidence to break the tabs?

    Signs of accepted caged queen?

Hmmm, the honest answer is I don’t know, there were so many bees around me it wasn’t easy to inspect that close to my eye. They were definitely covering the cage though.

    Signs of accepted caged queen?

I killed a queen of a very hostile hive yesterday and placed a new bought queen in a cage on a frame of brood. I had planned to break the tabs today but when I went into the hive as well as the bees being grumpy as normal, they were absolutely covering the cage. Even after I shook them off and...
