    Beehive roofs

I use a mixture of felt and metal roofs. The downside to metal roofs is bees when they're wet bees get stuck to them. I put my roofs upside down on the ground (uneven stone pavers) to stack boxes on and have never had roof felt rip yet.

Bees for hire? Looking for some advise

I wouldn't go near it. I doubt the guy will know how much work managing 10 hives actually is or that the number will significantly increase with swarm control measures requiring more equipment and work. I've spoken to a firm who operate this kind of scheme a few times before, Plan Bee, and came...

    Honey room floor

I find a bit Mr Muscle window cleaner and blue roll removes honey, wax and propolis from my LVT flooring well enough but for areas most likely to see spillage I put down couple of sections of retired display flooring. They're about 4x3' each and I get them from the off cut and broken bits bins...

    Warming cabinet heater

I'm using 2x60w and 1x40w tube heaters with modified thermal cut outs controlled by an STC-1000 in a tall larder fridge. Added a handful of 80mm PC fans to avoid hot spots and reinforced the wire shelves with wooden laths to support the weight of the honey.

Swarm catching devices and extendable poles.

I just use a tree pruner and temporarily attach a cardboard box to the end by folding one of the flaps back, pushing the saw blade through the edge and securing it with tape. Probably used it 4 times to catch swarms, the rest of the year it's used to prune trees.

Using just top bars in national supers

I started experimenting with foundationless frames without wax starters on my brood frames after another beekeeper showed me his. Still using skewers for support but in place of wax strips I've used wooden lollipop sticks from Hobbycraft. Placing the frame between existing drawn frames the bees...

    Allotment rules

Here in Hull they specifically require public liability insurance.

What they're telling you is wrong. With online sales they are legally obliged to accept a return for a full refund with no reason at all if contacted within 14 days of you receiving the item. Do a Google search for: Long distance selling returns To find the . gov.uk page detailing your...

    Bees in a tree

Probably because you'd opened the cavity. I used it last weekend to get bees out of cavity in a house wall. Applied it away from the entrance and the bees left through it. It'd probably take more creativity to get to the back of a cavity in a tree but certainly feasible.

    Bees in a tree

You can probably get them out with Bee Quick. Put a nuc with old comb and swarm attractant near the hole and in contact with the tree so they can crawl into it, give it a day for them to notice it then squirt Bee Quick into the hole and wait for them to come out.

    Blowtorch recommendation please!

I use a roofer's torch with a 6kg gas bottle. Been using the same bottle since 2017, would've spend a fortune on tiny cannisters in the same time. Instead of paying the deposit for a new gas bottle I found a flytipped one and exchanged it - wasn't even the same size.

    Commercial to National Hive

Just put national supers on your commercial brood boxes. I've used commercial brood boxes and national supers for years and any floors, roofs, frame queen excluders I've bought have been National too. There's only 5mm difference in the footprint, so 2.5mm on each side which is probably within...

I have two 5 frame National Nucs both with white marked 2021 Queens for sale in Hull (HU5). One ready to go into a full sized hive (pictured) and the other still building up. They're priced at £140 and £120 respectively which includes a £20 deposit on the nuc refundable for up to 2 weeks.

Swarm from Colony of a May emerged Queen?

Have a Google for "Russian Scion", make one and hang it between your hives and that tall tree. 🤔

    Simon The Beekeeper flash sale

I've had a bee jacket from them, hood zip was broken and they said it was out of their eBay returns policy but sent a replacement anyway. Ordered a couple of capping forks which they substituted with different (cheaper) ones then refused a refund till I took it to the eBay or PayPal resolution...

    Scout Bees

If one swarm liked a location chances are another will too, after all they're looking for the same parameters. If you know any beekeepers near yourself try raising the topic of swarm control in conversation, I found two people keeping bees very near me who do no swarm control at all (🤦‍♂️) so...

    Beeks not in Associations

On my allotment site there have been two failed attempts at beekeeping by plot holders who didn't join an association, there's also a long term beekeeper who isn't in an association either and she's completely inept with her hives being essentially unmanaged but inhabited stacks of supers and...

Looking for a Beekeeper in Hull area

How about telling us all a bit more info. Does the beekeeper keep the honey? Are you supplying equipment for swarm control? What happens to artificial. Swarms? I notice the forum says you're in Nottingham which makes having hives in Hull a bit wierd, is this actually a commercial venture like...

    One handed queen catcher

I have two of these devices a Korean made one with blue plastic which I think is the original device and the Chinese made one in your link with yellow plastic and a thumb slider on the side. The Chinese one has limited motion for the stopper giving you less control and on mine the sponge was...
