    East Lancs Monthly Meeting.

Interesting presentation given today by Janet Murray on the Miller Method of Queen rearing. I know that information for this sort of thing is readily available on the internet but I find it is always easier to follow when someone is explaining and demonstrating the method to you in a easy to...

Anyone tried, seen, touched the poly hive from maisemore

I recently purchased a Maisemore poly hive. They are very well made and very easy to put together. I have painted mine with a couple of coats of smooth masonry paint and it is now good to go. I hopefully will have bees in the hive in the very near future. As soon as I have it up and running I...

    hive type

First of all welcome to the forum. This is the place to be for info an advice. As a new beekeeper myself I would agree with most of the advice given so far and go with National hives. I myself have purchased a poly one and have built a few National nucs using scrap wood I had. I joined my...

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

I did not use any plans. I looked at a few but decided to make my own. I have made 6 frame national nucs with open mesh floors and telescopic (raised) roofs to allow a feeder to be used. The inside allows for beespace on all sides of the frames.

What did you do in the 'workshop' today

Cut the wood I marked out yesterday for a few nucs and put them together. OMF floors and high roofs capable of holding a feeder to make in the next few days.

    Using A Queen Castle?

Thank you Finman for your reply. Although I have not seen any mention of Queen piping, I can see how it could be a problem with new Queens being in close proximity to each other.

    Using A Queen Castle?

I have been reading up and watching videos with regards to the use of a Queen Castle as part of the queen rearing process and new colony building. I am interested in finding out if any forum members have any experience of using this method and how successful their experiences were.

    Apiary Site Secured.

Excellent couple of hours at the ELBA hive opening this morning. There was a demo first using a spare hive and then a full hive opening of both hives that are sited there. The first was doing very well but the second unfortunately was in a poor state with suspected nosema. I have also been up...

Tomorrow morning I am going to the ELBA hive opening and will be asking about a mentor while I am there. In the afternoon I am going to my Brothers allotment to work out where I can place any hives that I wish to set up in the near future. As I have said I have a few bait hives ready to go and...

I don't have a nuc on order or have a mentor as yet. I wanted to make sure I had secured a site before getting any bees. I have recently made contact with the East Lancs BA and will be going along to the hive openings this coming Sunday for some hands on experience. I do have a number of bait...

    Apiary Site Secured.

I've just had word from my Brother that I can use his allotment to place a few hives as needed. He had to OK it with the parish council first but they have given him the green light. This will be my first apiary site being a beginner. I have the equipment ready. Just need the bees.bee-smillie

    Beginner: Who To Contact?

A shame we never got to talk. Maybe next time. I will have a look at the Preston website for sure and see if I can make it to a one of your site openings. I had a talk to Barry who lives a couple of miles from me. He gave me some helpful advice and info.
