    Calm restored!

Well my new Carnolian queen's bees have started taking over the hive and the difference is HUGE-and great to see. I know I am supposed to be able to breed my own queen but frankly, life is too short and neighbors have limited tolerence for bad tempered bees while I get good at it. Not all of us...

What type of frames to go for ?

I have just converted to 12"x14" frames and altered my National hives to accomodate. I wish I had had a better indication/ knowledge regarding what would be the best size of hive for modern bees. Langstroth would have been so much better when I started out but no one seems to want to influence...

    Carniolan bees temper

Carnolians have been a great success for me. I am requeening as queen made from last years colony too fiesty and following for the garden.Although they are still pussycats compared to the horror stories I read on this forum! They are also known for being swarmy so pay attention once you are off...

    Can't find the queen

Wasn't sure what was happening in the end so got local opinion. He suggested it was a failing queen as brood pattern sparce and drone "peppered" not in blocks. So I moved old box with failing queen[who I couldn't find]with what little brood there was to one side. This allowed the flying bees...

    Agressive bees

I did requeen Beesandsheep and it did help. The madams are still cows[if you see what I mean] but not quite so vicious.Although I thought I would get away with topping up the food of the Millar feeder without smoke the other evening. WRONG. I have a swollen ankle to show for my assumptions. I...

    Can't find the queen

New queen finally arrived, she is in ,acccepted and the bees are a bit happier too! I will be glad when her little Carnolian babies are the new kids on the block as this lot have been nightmares-stinging,following and really no fun to be with. Thanks for the help all-I am sorted.

    Feeding bees their own honey

I have finally completed the process of putting my colonies onto larger frames.Hurrah! The old, no longer wanted ,smaller brood frames have some stores of honey on them. Can I harvest this and feed the bees with it? The old frames were not diseased but had been used for brood so a bit on the...

    Can't find the queen

Yeh sorry. If you are trying to get rid of the laying workers , don't you take the hive some distance away and shake the bees off the frames, hoping the non laying bees don't make it back to the hive? In which case if you have a new hive in the original site for them to find, why shake them off...

    Can't find the queen

When you do a shook swarm to replace drone laying queen, why do you have to shake the bees off the frames? If you have another box for them to go to,won't they just fly to it with out being shaken to the ground some distance away? wouldn't this reduce the trauma of it all?
