    Snelgrove II vs. Supersedure (?)

I would normally swear by Snelgrove II (Wally Shaw), but this year it has let me down a few times, with the box with the Q carrying on with swarming preparations and actually going on to swarm on two occasions. The issue as I see it that pretty much all the swarm-control techniques that split...

    Association - CIO?

Any group of people can form themselves into a club/society/association, with members, a constitution, etc. Banks will provide accounts to such groups. However, such an association is not a legal entity. It cannot own property. Liability rests with the committee members and, perhaps, the...

    Balling in Queen Clip

Yesterday, I was performing a manipulation on a double brood hive. This had a great queen, 14 frames of brood over the two boxes. I was going to split it, but also take a couple of brood frames out to use as test frames in other hives. So that I knew where the queen was, I caught her in a...

Local Associations not aligned with BBKA

I can confirm that Leicestershire & Rutland BKA was a member of the BBKA in the distant past, but decided to leave and hasn’t looked back. There is no intention to reverse the situation.

    I've seen that happen too.

    Dwv

Thanks. I had a low level of DWV bees earlier in the year and treated a second time for varrroa. I still have low levels of DWV bees and wondered whether I was simply seeing the same bees from earlier in the season or more recently hatched bees. Your link suggests that they must be more recent.

    Dwv

Does anyone know how long bees with deformed wings, owing to DWV, live within the hive? As they can’t carry out the full range of duties of a normal worker, do they survive for longer, because they won’t face the risks and wear & tear that come from flying and foraging?

    Refurbishing a honey extractor

When you say steel, do you know what type of steel? If its a stainless steel then it will be food safe already.

    Re'invent the wheel

The whole idea of the dummy board in the twelfth space is to be able to remove the DB without rolling the bees. With twelve frames just fitting into the BB, the first frame removed will roll the bees.

queens and eggs an queen cells!

I was about to start copying links to Wally Shaw's documents on the WBKA website for you, but then I spotted that you are familiar with his work. Sounds like you have applied the Pagden method of AS (queen and flying bees together). I too have had mixed results with that approach. However, I’ve...

    Poly rookie

I have those nucs too. The runners should be OK, but they are only polystyrene, so don’t go at them with the hive tool to clean them up like you might with a metal runner. When you can take the nuc out of service, gently clean it with washing soda solution and a kitchen sponge/scrub. Be aware...

    Galvanised steel varroa floor mesh

Contrary to popular belief, stainless steel is not immune to corrosion. I’ve seen some horrific examples of stainless corrosion, where you would think that the item was made from mild steel. However, compared to many other materials from which you could manufacture utensils that come into...

    Galvanised steel varroa floor mesh

The zinc is there to act as a protective coating over the underlying mild steel, which would otherwise corrode. The zinc is a sacrificial coating, corroding in preference to the iron in the steel. The protective action can persist even with only a partial coating of zinc remaining. So, when...

An effective method of swarm control

As masterBK says, this looks like a variation on Selgrove's II method. For a more comprehensible write up, take a look at Wally Shaw's guide at the Welsh Beekeepers Association website.
