Nadiring to move nectar up worked!

Ok, well perhaps I will need to move it back up. Presumably a very quick move with two of us doing it will be OK at this time of year? Still quite warm here.

Nadiring to move nectar up worked!

On other discussions about this it was suggested that a nadir acted as a sort of 'porch' and helped keep draughts out of brood. This seemed like a good idea to me.

Nadiring to move nectar up worked!

Just to let you know, had two supers on hive, one was staying on as winter stores, and one had some nectar in it which I wanted to take off and store. After excellent advice fronpm here, out the super to be stored under brood box, and when took it off a week ago, they had moved all honey up and...

    Alternative insulation

Do most people insulate around the hive as well! I was going to put some wire round to stop woodpeckers, although clearly this is not insulating! Is mouseguard essential too? I would have though the beeps would see off any mice that came in.

    Alternative insulation

Thank you. Ok, am getting the idea: no substitutes! Will see if I can chat up some builders!

    Alternative insulation

Have been reading on the forum about insulating the roof over winter with (I want to say Semtex, but maybe cemex?!) is there something I can use instead as apparently this is super pricey? Would bubble wrap work? Also... How small should the entrance be reduced to?

I had a lot of deaths with my MAQs :-(. Fortunately HMs survived!

Switching from cold-way to warm way

I was going to change my frames from cold to warm as thought it might keep them warmer over winter. Is this a foolish/ pointless idea? They will have a nadir.

    Nadir + eke?

    Lovely, beautifully clear- thanks Swarm!

    Nadir + eke?

I'm not really sure. Nothing was very clear, she kept saying it was a 'management decision!'. The whole experience was a bit confusing- i was clearer before! But very grateful for the time given and learned lots too. Visited her apiary (just to make me feel bad!) and learned how to heft. .Bit...

    Nadir + eke?

Firstly, sorry for all the questions! Believe it or not I do have 3 books but they never seem to tell me the information I want! Am still struggling with how to clean up the supers which have some uncapped honey in them that I won't be keeping on the hive and whether to put the supers that I am...

    Bald brood

No inspection tray. The hives are not raised that far off their table - 4 inches or so, though and I wonder if there is not enough ventilation. I need to sort what they standing on as have made a bit of an error there. Will I keep the varroa floor open for the winter?

    Bald brood

They are a pretty strong colony (I think!) there's lots of them and queen has been excellent. Have just been outside as read that you often see the wax moths on the outside of the box at night, but no moths at all. If there is wax moth, am I right in thinking there is nothing I can do about it...

    Bald brood

Yes, they seem to be in lines I think. Certainly in patches as opposed to dotted here and there

    Bald brood

On last inspection I discovered a fair bit of bald brood in one hive. The chief beek who came to look at the hives said it was because if excessive amounts of varroa. But... I have done 2 drone uncappings and found hardly any varroa in them. Equally, have never had bald brood before. Treated...

Winter super configuration. Top or bottom?

:-) thanks very much dusty. Have the 'leader' of my local BBKA coming tomorrow to look at the hives so am going to try and impress her by using 'nadiring'!
