    14x12 Full colony(ies) and / or 14x12 overwintered nucs

Hello all, I've suffered zero losses over the last couple of years and my Apiaries have grown quite a bit more than I originally anticipated - Given that I have a full time job to focus on and the missus keeps telling me that "you love your bees more than me" - I've decided I should probably...

Queenless, eggless, cupless, clueless... oh, and 14x12 issues... :-)

Hi Pete, hope your bees are going well. I was just about to give you a call when my neighbour phoned to say that there is a colony setting up shop in his garden - I guess this explains where my queen has gone :-) I'm going to be finishing work early to collect, another first for me, this...

Queenless, eggless, cupless, clueless... oh, and 14x12 issues... :-)

Ok - new queen is now hanging between a couple of frames of brood ready for me to remove the candy plug tomorrow to let them start eating their way to each other. Things could have gone a lot smoother - there was some drone brood cells and I did spot a few grains of rice (I didn't recognise...

Queenless, eggless, cupless, clueless... oh, and 14x12 issues... :-)

Thanks Midland Beek - this approach seems like a really good compromise... the whole trouble with the brood and a half is the added stress of tooling around with 2 separate boxes that the queen could be roaming around in. Using this approach the queen is always confined to a single box with the...

Queenless, eggless, cupless, clueless... oh, and 14x12 issues... :-)

Hi all, I have a colony on national brood and a half that is currently Queen-less (and eggless), they had a number of emergency queen cups which were damaged when I took the super frames out for inspection - the damn things had a small amount of brace comb down to the deep frames which tore the...

    AMM Queen wanted (Notts.)

Hi all, I've just started my second year beekeeping and I'd like a couple of AMM queens for two new colonies this year - I'd really like to source them locally - my main concern is helping propagate the native AMM so as pure as possible is my desire. Does anyone on here run a queen...

Have I killed a load of my bees? :-(

Well now that I know it's not robbing I have but the entrance back to a small opening, bigger than one bee space. I reduced it to 1 bee space as I found a lot of evidence to suggest that it helped the guard bees in their defence and the traffic would reduce opportunities for robbers to get in...

Have I killed a load of my bees? :-(

Just taken the dogs for a walk and discovered that the River Maun at the back of my house has a mile long stretch of Himalayan Balsam (or something equivalent) on both banks - all covered in bees :-) http://www.rupc.co.uk/bees/balsam1.jpg http://www.rupc.co.uk/bees/balsam2.jpg Good shout!

Still worried - is this video showing robbing?

Bingo! I knew this and I'd read this in my books! It's 110% this - I can't believe I didn't think of it. Thank you Roola - you've made my weekend! I've just been on holiday for 3 weeks and stuffed a load of feed in the roof of the hive in case the weather turned sour before I got back. The...

Have I killed a load of my bees? :-(

Having reduced the entrances to 1 bee space - I've now uploaded a video here... http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=362530#post362530 ...I'm still unsure on the business.

Still worried - is this video showing robbing?

Hi all, I posted in this forum a day or so ago where I was worrying that Irobbing and that my robbing countermeasures had killed a load of my bees... http://www.beekeepingforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=26309 Having taken on board the advice from that thread I removed the robbing screens and...

Have I killed a load of my bees? :-(

I fitted it around 8pm - the bees were still active but I was convinced there was robbing and started panicking and thought the home bees would find a way back in so bunged it on. On top of the bee damage I also butchered a perfectly good travel screen to make my robber defence - what a tool! :-)

Have I killed a load of my bees? :-(

A quick Google shows that Sherwood Forest / Sherwood Pines is full of Himalayan Balsam (wildsherwood.co.uk) - both of which are within touching distance of my colonies. I really hope I've not done them too much damage - It's another lesson learned I guess.

Have I killed a load of my bees? :-(

The impediment has been removed but I'm going to lose sleep over this - why didn't they find the way in at the top of the robber screen? Everything I read and everyone I've spoken to have said the bees that live there will find a way in. Totally bummed out.

Have I killed a load of my bees? :-(

Hi all, I started beekeeping this spring and everything has been going great in my two colonies - I even managed to harvest a tiny bit of honey whilst leaving both my 14x12 hives with a full honey super on. Over the last few weeks one of my hives (the slightly stronger of my two) has been...

    Weird sun related behaviour...

Hi all, I'm new to beekeeping and I know that the bees use the sun for navigation / communicating using the waggle dance but I've been observing a strange behaviour that I've not read about anywhere and I'm wondering what it is. Can anyone offer an explanation... I have two colonies that...

Lots of drones in the super

Could it be a failing queen that hasn't been superceded causing egg laying workers in the super?
