    Cleaning 2 ‘lost’ hives

Total of 4 hives in this apiary, the other apiary which is a 50 metres away is unaffected. I did remove honey after Spring and so its possible that they started although I don’t think so as the supers did have some honey left in them. Owner hive had dead bees outside and so a reply down suggest...

    Cleaning 2 ‘lost’ hives

yes one of the hives did have a pile of bees dead outside so possibly CBPV …. Can I store the supers over winter and introduce them next year. If not is there a way to sanitise them and then use them? Thanks

    Cleaning 2 ‘lost’ hives

It’s always possible that they starved as I took honey off at the end of Spring

    Cleaning 2 ‘lost’ hives

I’ve lost 2 hives in the last month that were next to each other in my small apiary …. I’ve no clues on what happened although many dead bees in the bottom of the brood box. Both hives have 2 or 3 supers above that are now well and truly stripped of the small amount of honey they contained...

Crazy, aggressive bees - what to do?

When it comes to requeening with a more docile queen, how long do folks suggest after killing the ‘old’ aggressive queen to introduce the new queen and what process? Thanks

    Drones appearing - Kent

I’ve just completed the first inspection on my 4 colonies 3 overwintered on a super over a brood box and the final hive was a brood/super/brood setup. All 4 were bursting with bees with eggs/larvae at all stages …. I was staggered how well they’d come through. One of the hives harboured a good...

Starting a one frame nuc. Too late?

i think the wasps will attack it and it’ll be gone in a matter of days as I learnt last week. I’m now trying another approach: https://beekeepingforum.co.uk/threads/avoiding-the-wasps-attacking-my-nuc.53534/

Avoiding the wasps attacking my Nuc

I had some ‘spare’ queens and wanted to create a few Nucs to take through winter but the wasps had different ideas and just swamped them to get to the honey stores. So with only one queen left I’ve taken a bit of a risk and created a double queen hive. The original hive has a good queen...

    Nuc plans cutting guide

I’m looking for a cutting guide/dimensions to give to my local timber merchant to help me build 2 or 3 Roger Patterson Nucs. I’ve taken a look at the David Cusham page and although its a great resource, I’m very confused  http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/roger_nuc_box.html Could anyone...

    Nuc plans

Thanks for posting the link to the plans although I’m really struggling to understand the dimensions of all the parts on the plans. Is it just me or are they very confusing?

    Aggressive swarm(s)

Update as of yesterday ! I washed my suit and went for marigolds no change in behaviour and so I opted for new Buckfast Queens. The old Queens were killed 3 weeks ago and the hives inspected for a week for QC which were destroyed before the new marked Queens went in 11 days ago. I inspected...

    Aggressive swarm(s)

Thanks and I’ll wash and put nitriles over them. Will nitriles on their own prevent stings?

    Aggressive swarm(s)

They start attacking fairly soon after I open the hive but gets worse as I work through, I’m trying to be as gentle and calm as possible avoiding any squashed ladies as I work. I usually open them up mid morning around 11am after a light cereal breakfast so i don’t feel its diet/smell. They do...
