God I love growing our own

Our six Burpless Tasty Green cucumber plants have been really prolific this year. In the last month I’ve had 25 cucumbers in the fridge most of the time, despite giving them away in pairs to friends and neighbours. I think several factors have contributed; 1) Because of a series of family...

    Mans best friend ?

So sorry to hear about little Peanut. I hope in time, the good times you’ve had with her will be stronger than the sadness you feel now. Take care.

    Interesting Hive Design

Saw this and thought of all the beehive historians and possibly DIY-ers.

Aims and objectives for 23 season

We tried one two years ago. We also looked around for a 'good' recipe for the lure. A key part of the design (very similar to what you've described) was following an American guy who made his 'roof' just larger than than a brood box, so that when it was lowered, you had a ready made top for your...

    Talk to WI

These sound like great suggestions, but if I may add my ten-penneth; a tip the secretary of one of the groups I've spoken to (not about bees) was "don't forget, whatever the topic, we like to be entertained". If you try to picture yourself receiving the talk, what would you want to hear if you...

    Intensity of bee venom

Following my experiences with the bees in our garden and my subsequent reactions to venom, we moved them to a farm. It was a sad day and we really miss having them in the garden - it is SO quiet without them. However a few weeks on and the bees have settled at their new address and are happily...

    Intensity of bee venom

Quite shocking when you hear so much about none life-threatening treatments being given. However in a post-Covid era perhaps the NHS is having to prioritise much more (still seems totally unreasonable to me). Sam, if you haven’t put anything in writing, how can it be enforced? Good luck.

    Intensity of bee venom

If the letter offering you the course of immunotherapy doesn’t specify giving up beekeeping as a condition, surely you can accept and wait for them to ask you again if you’re still keeping bees. Is it possible it could have been the personal views of one doctor as opposed to local policy? I wish...

    Intensity of bee venom

This is very sobering. I remember reading your message some time ago and started this thread partly with your experience in mind.

    Intensity of bee venom

Following my trip to A&E on the advice of the NHS phone service, I was given 3.5 days steroid tablets and more of the same type of Piriton that I already had. Even in a hour or so the swelling was noticeably reduced. So my (non-medical) conclusion was that Piriton alone would not have treated...

    Intensity of bee venom

I haven't done What Three Words for the new site yet, as we've just moved the bees last week. I will do it NOW - thank you.

    Intensity of bee venom

Perhaps Ian123 and Swarm's comments above (#12 and #13) support Dani's suggestion (#3) that overwintered bee stings promote greater reactions than later season ones? But maybe it's also a question of building up resistance as the beekeeping season gets underway and we receive more stings?

    Intensity of bee venom

Thank you madasafish and Alex.mc. Have looked over the NHS info on anaphylaxis and will wait to see what the next one brings before taking further action. If my reaction is faster/greater than the last time, I’ll discuss the long term situation with my GP. I had a sting on the same eyebrow last...
